Während den Dreharbeiten zu Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas entwickelte sich einen tiefe Freundschaft zwischen Johnny Depp und Hunter S. Thompson, welche anhielt bis zu Thompson's Tod im Jahr 2005.
Nun sechs Jahre später, kehrt der Erfinder des Gonzo-Journalismus zurück von den Toten.

Johnny Depp, welcher damals das beinahe 50 Jahre alte Manuskript in Hunter S. Thompsons Keller fand, übernimmt die Rolle des Paul Kemp, ein Thompson-esquer Journalist, welcher im Puerto Rico der 50er einen Job als Zeitungsredakteur annimmt.
